1861 census living at 61 Eastwick Terrace Newcastle on Tyne with his daughter. Age 64, birth estimated as between 7th April 1796 -7th April 1797 in Scotland. His two sons were also staying with the Douse family. It was Easter weekend.
Linda Kelsey: Bill Tinline spoke to me when I visited him in St. Peters hospital before he died. He asked me to discover the family history of James Spens he knew had been born in Scotland between 1796 and 1797.
Thomas Spens the first physician at Edingburgh Hospital had three brothers, James born 1761, Grahame born ? and Nathaniel born ? and one sister Janet.
Thomas's wife was Bithia Wood. He had no details of their family.
James married Isabella Elizabeth Macleod 1n 1787, Frances Stuart in 1797 and Elizabeth Joanna Davidson in 1804 Three children are mentioned Nathaniel, John and Hannah
