General Notes:
Bryan Tinlin writes: Worked at Messrs. Rutherford & Thompson, solicitors in Jedburgh. Left Jedburgh in September 1839 for Sydney and Adelaide; went to New Zealand in Sep 1840. In Oct 1840, he and some partners opened a business as storekeepers in Lampton Quay (Wellington). He settled in Nelson in early 1842. He was appointed Clerk of the Magistrate’s Court in 1844 and was later Deputy Registrar in Nelson, and served as Sheriff of the Province of Nelson for five years. He was sent by the New Zealand government in 1850 to find a suitable land route between Nelson and the Wairau. He owned very large sheep farms in several places in New Zealand. Mt. Tinline, Tinline River, the Tinline Downs, etc. in New Zealand were named after him. In Jan 1868 he was living in Amuri [father’s obit.]. In 1891 he was listed as staying in the Tavistock Hotel, Covent Garden, London, when he was single, and working as a cattle sheep foreman [cen.]. Some of this information came from others, notably William Nixon Tinline (Newcastle, England), John Tinlin (Australia) and Malcolm Tinlin (Australia).
